We're all feeling the pressure of rising costs, and City Hall should be mindful of that when making decisions about how we spend public money. Residents deserve to know that their tax dollars are being used wisely and that City Hall is focused on delivering the greatest possible value for our community.
That means looking for efficiencies, carefully evaluating major investments, and making difficult choices when necessary. We can protect the services residents rely on while making smart investments in the infrastructure and opportunities that will help Castlegar thrive.
Responsible finances are a means to make things better in our community without having residents pay more.
Financial Stability
Make it Easier to Open and Operate a Local Business
Local businesses are at the heart of Castlegar's economy and our community's identity. Opening or renovating a business can be a significant financial challenge, particularly for entrepreneurs trying to bring older commercial spaces up to current standards. The City should look for ways to make it easier to invest in our downtown and commercial areas, including exploring a grant program to help local businesses with the costs of bringing their storefronts and buildings up to code.
By helping entrepreneurs invest in their businesses, we can support local jobs, encourage new businesses to open, and create more vibrant commercial spaces throughout Castlegar.
More Transparency
Residents deserve to know how their tax dollars are being spent and to have confidence that their local government is making responsible decisions with public money. Castlegar should strive to be one of the most transparent and accessible municipalities in B.C., making it easier for residents to understand the decisions being made on their behalf and hold their elected officials accountable.
If elected, I will hold regular open-door office hours where residents can meet with me directly to ask questions, share concerns, and discuss the issues that matter to them. Good government starts with listening, and I want to make sure the people I represent always have a direct line to their councillor.
Consider the Creation of a Municipal Wealth Fund
Castlegar should think beyond the next budget and plan for the long-term financial health of our community. I would explore the creation of a municipal wealth fund that could invest a portion of eligible municipal revenues or assets, allowing the City to build a source of long-term financial stability and future investment.
A well-managed fund could help reduce pressure on future taxpayers and provide additional resources for important community projects and services. By putting some of today's resources to work for tomorrow, we can strengthen Castlegar's financial independence and create more opportunities.

Financial sustainability means planning beyond the next budget. Castlegarshould work towards a more long-term approach to managing our finances, maintaining our infrastructure, and preparing for the costs we know are coming. We should regularly review our plans and budgets to make sure they reflect current economic conditions and the needs of our growing community.
We also need to look carefully at every available source of revenue and find opportunities to diversify how we fund the services and infrastructure our residents rely on. By doing so, we can make the investments Castlegar needs to modernize aging infrastructure without placing unnecessary pressure on residents who are already facing a higher cost of living.
Good asset management is an important part of that work. By proactively tracking the condition and lifecycle of infrastructure such as roads and water systems, we can identify problems earlier, plan for replacement costs, and avoid paying more later. Planning ahead won't eliminate every challenge, but it can help us make better decisions today and build a more financially resilient Castlegar for the future.
